Games with Gold – June 2019

Microsoft has announced the lineup for June’s Games with Gold and it looks pretty solid and even includes a couple of indie titles. Let’s see what we’ve got coming up…

NHL 19

As an ice hockey fan, I’m pretty happy to see this game included, but I’d still rather see more indie titles getting some attention as these games are pretty niche. However, the THREES mode is pretty enjoyable if you’re not a fan of the sport.

Portal: Still Alive

If for some reason, you’ve never played Portal, now’s your chance. To be fair, even if you have, there’s no better time to play this Xbox 360 again on your Xbox One.

Earth Defense Force 2017

Earth Defense Force 2017 (which was released for the Xbox 360 in 2006 in Japan) will be available through backwards compatibility and is the first indie game on our list.

The game was developed by Sandlot, a small Japanese game studio that was founded in 2001 by former employees of Human Entertainment which closed down in 2000.

In Earth Defense Force 2017, players have to fend off hordes of aliens. This third-person shooter allows you to choose a couple of weapons for each mission and even pilot vehicles such as tanks, helicopters, hoverbikes, and mechs. Count me in!

Rivals of Aether

This is an indie fighting game that has you utilising the classical elements earth, air, fire, and water as you beat seven bells out of your enemies in this beautiful pixel-art game.

The game was developed by Dan Fornace, who also created Super Smash Land, a remake of Super Smash Bros. Rivals of Aether is considered the spiritual successor to that game.

In the game, you can play Story Mode, Abyss Mode, or even online! If you like Super Smash Bros., you’re probably have a lot of fun with this one.

Personally, I reckon this is a pretty decent selection of games for the month, but I’d love to hear what you think about them.
